NEPG estimates the increase in potato area to 3.6% for the 2017/18 season.
The NEPG (North-Western European Potato Growers) estimates that the increase in potato area in 2017 will be + 3.6% compared to 2016.
The total area of the five NEPG countries could thus reach 572 485 hectares (excluding plants and starch). For the 2017/2018 season, the five NEPG countries will all plant more potatoes, the biggest increase being again observed in Belgium. Compared to the five-year average, the area would increase by 7.2%.
Based on the average yield observed over the past five years on the perimeter of the NEPG, the total harvest would increase by 5.4% to about 27 000 000 tonnes. NEPG insists that the final crop will be mainly based on yields, much more than surfaces.
