Poland is a major producer of berries (strawberries, raspberries, redcurrants, bilberries). While production of some berries is declining, blueberry production continues to rise.
According to the latest figures, the area planted with bilberries in Poland now stands at over 12,000 hectares, and is still rising. In 2022, Polish production was estimated at 55,000 tonnes of bilberries, and in 2023 production was estimated at 67,500 tonnes, an increase of 22.73%.
Blueberries remain in demand on the Polish market. According to a study carried out by Kantar, in 2020 only 45% of the population ate blueberries, whereas in 2023 this figure had risen to 56%. Per capita consumption is 1.83 kg/year, more than in the United States.
There are a variety of sales channels: direct from the farm, pick-your-own, market sales, sales to intermediaries for wholesale markets, sales via online platforms, sales to supermarkets and chain shops.
