Hooray! Europe finally decides to protect bees rather than the interests of agro-chemical companies.
After a close vote, the European Commission will prohibit use of three fatal insecticides to bees.
15 countries including France and Germany voted in favor of the prohibition,. 8 countries including the United Kingdom, Italy and Hungary voted against, 4 countries including Ireland, which currently holds the EU presidency abstained from voting . Final vote: 187 votes for and 125 votes against prohibition and 33 abstentions.
The European Commission will suspend the use of three pesticides (especially Cruiser OSR) used primarily for corn, rapeseed, sunflower and cotton for 2 years starting from December 1.
Not surprisingly, the two leading manufacturers, German Bayer and Swiss Syngenta have multiplied the pressure of opposing against this decision. The union of major European agricultural syndicates Copa-Cogeca had asked for a delay to the prohibition and insisted on facing heavy financial losses.
