For the next autumn season 2024/25, a reduction of 3% is expected in the area dedicated to conventional tomato cultivation in Almeria (Spain), being the only product with a decrease in its cultivation area. According to data from the Association of Fruit and Vegetable Producers' Organisations in the province of Almeria - COEXPHAL, a decrease is expected in the loose and pear varieties, the latter being the most cultivated. In contrast, the organic tomato sector will experience growth, with a 17% increase in the number of hectares dedicated to vine tomatoes, which is projected to be the most widely planted organic variety, while the surface area for the pear variety is expected to decrease by 28%.
Pepper is set to be the largest crop this season, occupying 34% of the total, with 76% conventional pepper and the rest organic. An overall increase of 25% in cultivated hectares is anticipated compared to last season. The California Rojo variety, both in its conventional and organic versions, will be the most cultivated variety, recording significant increases in this new season.
As far as cucumber, courgette and aubergine are concerned, they are all showing growth trends for the autumn season. Cucumber stands out with an increase of 55% and representing 28% of the total. Aubergine, however, will occupy the smallest area with 5%, keeping the conventional crop area the same as last season.
