The new variety stands out for its early harvest, jumbo size, high yields, crisp texture, and exceptional flavour.
Peru has become one of the first testing grounds outside the United States for a promising new blueberry variety from the University of Florida’s breeding program. Known as FL19-006, the berry was planted in the country just four and a half months ago and is already showing outstanding performance.
Patricio Muñoz del Valle, Associate Professor of Blueberry Breeding and Genomics at the University of Florida, highlighted its standout traits: early harvest, jumbo size, high yields, crisp texture and exceptional flavour. Designed for the premium segment, FL19-006 also boasts an impressive eight-week postharvest life, making it ideal for long-distance export to demanding markets.
In Florida, the variety has rapidly expanded and tasting panels in the United States have confirmed its quality. Now, with limited availability in Peru, growers are eyeing November 2025 for the next planting stage, subject to special conditions.
