Consumption of fruits and vegetables continues to decline

Freshfel Europe has released its latest figures on the consumption of fruits and vegetables in the EU 28.
The consumption of fruits and vegetables has reached 386.96g/capita/day in 2012. This represents a decrease of -8.2% compared to 2011 and a decrease of -8.7% compared to the average of the years from 2007 to 2011. What also remains below the level recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) 400g of fresh fruits and vegetables per day level.
The consumption of fruits amounts to 167.62 g/capita/day, -11.8% compared to 2011 and -14.2% compared to the average of 2007-2011. The consumption of vegetables amount to 219.33g/capita/day
The production and imports of fruits and vegetables of the EU have decreased compared to 2011, the exports have continued to grow by +17% for fruits and by +8% for vegetables. In comparison with the period 2007-2011, exports of fruits increased by +39% and exports +20% of vegetables.
