Chilean fruit shipments increase in value through March

During the first quarter of 2024, Chile exported 1,125,220 tons of fruit, valued at US$3,721 million, according to data from the Office of Agricultural Studies and Policies (Odepa). This result shows a slight decrease of 1% in volume, but an increase of 4% in value compared to the same period of the previous year. Of these exports, 89% corresponded to fresh fruit, while 9% went to processed fruit, such as frozen, dehydrated, canned, juices and oils, and the remaining 1% to dried fruit.

China led as the largest recipient market, accounting for 42.5% of exports, followed by the USA, the Netherlands, Mexico and Brazil.

During the reporting period, the five main exported fruits showed the following results:

Cherries: topped the list with a total of 345,977 tons, marking an increase of 13%, and generating US$2,005 million, 10% more than the previous period. China received 90.5% of these exports, followed by the USA (3.5%), Taiwan (1%), South Korea (0.9%) and Brazil (0.7%).

Grapes: 267,213 tons were exported, representing a decrease of 13%, for a value of US$463 million, 12% less than before. Of this total, 97% corresponded to fresh fruit, with 247,731 tons shipped mainly to the U.S. (71.8%), China (5.6%), Mexico (3.3%), Japan (2.9%) and Canada (2.3%). In addition, 9,858 tons of dehydrated grapes were exported and grape juice exports increased by 79%, reaching 9,327 tons, with Japan and Korea as the main markets.

Plums: They reached a volume of 145,851 tons, up 13%, valued at US$301 million. Fresh plums accounted for 88% of this volume, with 128,415 tons and a revenue of US$240 million. The most important destinations included the USA, China, Mexico, Japan and Canada. Dried plums totaled 15,961 tons, an increase of 60%, generating US$55 million FOB.

Blueberries: They totaled 92,560 tons, up 7%, and were worth US$461 million, up 28%. Of these, 75,382 tons were fresh fruit, which generated US$402 million FOB. Major markets included the US, the Netherlands, Germany, the UK and China. Frozen blueberries also showed significant growth, with 14,009 tons exported, up 36%.

Nectarines: 85,287 tons were exported, 11% more than the previous period, for a value of US$124 million, an increase of 6%. The main destinations were China, USA, Taiwan, Mexico and the Netherlands.
