The production of dates in Jordan could quadruple in the coming years.
The Kingdom of Jordan produces annually about 10 000 tonnes of dates, the "Medjool" half of which is exported (EU, Canada, Japan). In the 7-8 years the production expected to reach 40 000 tonnes, to meet the growing international demand for this fruit.
With a global growth market, the authorities announced more support to farmers. So in order to expand the plantations, the Ministry of Water and Irrigation has announced increased allocations of water for irrigation in the Jordan Valley.
In Jordan, the average consumption of dates is between 2 kg to 3 kg per person per year, which is very low compared to the Gulf countries where the consumption per capita is estimated at 70 kg per year.
