New spiny artichoke boosts productivity and net returns in Junín.
In Junín, Peru, the National Institute of Agrarian Innovation has released a new spiny artichoke variety named INIA 106 – Concepción. Field trials show it yields about 19.61 t/ha, compared to 16.47–16.46 t/ha for the two reference varieties — a notable boost.
This new cultivar delivers strong economic returns, with net income averaging S/32,900/ha (US $9,212/ha), versus S/24,678–24,702 (US $6,900/ha) from older varieties. Even under scenarios simulating 10% lower yields or 10% higher costs, the new variety maintains profitability of over 156–158%, while others fall to around 114%.
Adapted to highland valleys between 2,500 and 3,400 meters — such as Alayo, Santa Ana, San Jerónimo, and Comas — the cultivar offers growers more competitive options for regions where green triguero artichoke is grown by hand and harvested in spring and early fall.
The variety’s release was formalized via official agricultural regulation on July 15, 2025, and a breeder’s rights application has been filed for national protection.
