The recent heavy rains and storms in Peru, particularly on the northern coast, had a significant impact on the agricultural sector.
433 kilometers of irrigation canals were affected, with 96 kilometers of canals destroyed, along with 17 reservoirs affected and 3 destroyed, stated Nelly Paredes, the head of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Management (Midagri).
In terms of crop production, 4,850 hectares of crops were damaged, with 4,067 hectares of crops being lost.
Regarding the lost crops, Paredes said that there is Catastrophic Agrarian Insurance (SAC) whose cost is assumed by said portfolio during the agricultural campaign (from August to July), but it is executed by the regional agricultural directorates.
Midagri personnel are already available to regional agrarian directorates to assist with inspections of affected farms. Some farmers are already receiving the insurance payout, according to Paredes.
To aid in clean-up efforts, the Midagri provided machinery for La Libertad, Cajamarca, Lambayeque, Piura, Lima, and Tumbes. Almost 100 kilometers of canals were cleared, impacting 23,631.6 hectares of agricultural production.
In addition, 51 motor pumps were delivered to La Libertad, Huánuco, Lambayeque, Piura, Lima, and Tumbes.
