Walmart accused of corruption in Teotihuacán

Walmart have paid $24 million to circumvent the law and open new stores near the site of Teotihuacán.

Walmart has been accused of active corruption, according to American newspaper The New York Times.

Walmart are suspected of payng bribes and kickbacks totaling $24 million to open 19 branches. The retail giant offered large sums to officials and municipalities to circumvent the law.

Walmart has managed to change the

 location of areas where it can build commercial buildings in ten cases, especially in Teotihuacan, near the famous Aztec ruins.

Despite fierce opposition the mall opened in December 2004 and the building is easily visible from the pyramids.
