A tropical storm has ravaged the south of Martinique, preliminary estimates indicate one third of crops lost.

On the day Tuesday, July 9, tropical storm "Chantal" has swept the Lesser Antilles and Martinique. Based on initial observations, southern Martinique seems particularly affected. The exact damage is still unclear.
The Ministry of Agriculture indicated in a statement that the banana sector might see 1/3 of the lost crops.
In Martinique, banana production was 189,500 tons in 2009, representing in value 54% of agricultural production on the island. In Guadeloupe the production was 59 3000 tons of bananas, representing 20% in value of agricultural production.
