Increase domestic production to reduce imports and reduce the trade deficit.
Fiji currently relies on imported products to meet the demands of the tourism sector, but the government believes that the country has the potential to reduce imports by increasing agricultural production.
The traditional fruits in Fiji are banana, pineapple, papaya and mango. The country imports apples, oranges, pears and grapes. National statistics have shown that the country imports fresh fruits worth over $ 1 million and processed fruits for $155,000.
The government estimates that the country has the potential to reduce by 50% its imported fruit bill, mainly to meet the demands of the tourism sector. The government has just launched a program to create orchards of fruit trees to develop domestic production.
