Brazil sees fivefold increase in onion imports
VU
Argentina and Chile lead in the supply of imported onion.
The onion market in Brazil is starting 2025 under unstable conditions. Imports surged to 19,728 tons in March — almost five times more than in February — according to data from Conab. Argentina led exports to Brazil with 58% of the total, followed by Chile with 42%, according to Cepea. Both countries have large stockpiles, allowing them to maintain supply.
Even though Brazil’s 2024/2025 harvest is expected to grow by 44%, reaching an estimated 127,600 tons, imports are likely to remain high. Cepea notes that planted area will shrink in regions like the Cerrado and Northeast due to good harvest prospects in the South. However, extreme heat in February and March damaged crop quality, even in Santa Catarina.
Stocks that were supposed to last until May or June are already showing signs of depletion. Buyers are turning to imported onions, especially from Argentina and Chile, due to better quality.
The current situation highlights the strain between limited domestic supply and international trade dynamics.
