The annual production of cherimoya in Peru reaches 20 thousand tons, according to data from the General Directorate of Agricultural Development and Agroecology (DGDAA) of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri).
The main production areas of this fruit are the departments of Lima, Piura, Cajamarca, Apurímac and Junín.
Lima represents 40% of the total national production, that is, between 7,500 and 8,000 tons. San Mateo de Otao, the province of Huarochirí, is the area where cherimoya is most produced.
The most produced varieties are Chiuna 1, Chiuna 2, Chiuna 3 and selections such as Cumbe. The peak production season falls in the period between April and June.
Cherimoya is cultivated by small organized producers, and is distributed among local and international markets.
