Uzbekistan's cherries could significantly increase their market share in China.
The first cargoes of the Uzbekistan cherry season arrived in China. Last year, Uzbekistan began exporting cherries to China and hopes this year to significantly increase its volumes.
Uzbekistan's cherries are shipped by cargo plane to China because the land transport links between the two countries are difficult. These air shipments allow Uzbek cherries to arrive on the Chinese market about 48 hours after their harvest.
Uzbekistan began supplying cherries to China in 2018. The quantities were minimal but this year these quantities could increase considerably. Indeed, because of tariffs driven by the trade dispute between the US and China, the volume of US cherries on the Chinese market in 2018 totaled 14,000 tonnes, but could collapse this year.
The other advantage of Uzbek cherries is their price on the Chinese market. Distinctly lower than other imported cherries.
Uzbekistan is the world's 5th largest exporter of cherries, in value terms, with $127.8 million. After Chile ($1.1 billion), Hong Kong ($647.8 million), the United States ($502.3 million), Turkey ($161.7 million).
