Expansion continues for air cargo, with contrasting results across the world.
IATA (International Air Transport Association), the international air transport association, which brings together 290 airlines accounting for 82% of the world's traffic, has published its data on air cargo markets. Demand for air cargo rose 2% in September.
IATA released its data on global air cargo markets, showing that demand, measured in tonne-kilometers of freight (FTKs), increased by 2.0% in September 2018, compared to the same period of the year former. This rate remains virtually unchanged from the previous month. Freight capacity, measured in kilometers of available freight tonnes (AFTKs), increased by 3.2% in September 2018.
Growth in demand has been observed in all regions except Africa:
- Asia-Pacific region: Air freight demand increased by 1.2% in September 2018 compared to the same period last year. The capacity increased by 1.2%.
- North America Region: Demand increased by 1.5% in September 2018 compared to September 2017. Capacity increased 4.9% over the same period. The recent upswing in the US economy and strong consumer spending have helped boost demand for air cargo, benefiting US carriers.
- Europe region: Demand increased by 1.5% in September 2018 compared to September 2017. Capacity increased by 0.9%.
- Middle East region: This is the fastest growing region, with an increase in demand of 6.6% compared to the same period a year earlier. The capacity increased by 7.7%.
- Latin America region: freight demand increased by 2.9% in September 2018 and capacity by 4.3%.
- Africa region: freight demand fell by 2.1% in September 2018, however capacity increased by 6.2%.
