Vertiginous progression of +65% in 5 years for exports of melons of Honduras.
The FPX (Federación de Agroexportadores Honduras) announced, for the 2012-13 season, the export of 14.7 million boxes of melons (40 lb). Sales of 60 million $. The United States is the largest market for melons of Honduras followed by Europe and Asia.
Melon exports recorded a constant progression in recent years: Honduras exported 8.8 million boxes (40 lb) in 2009, then 9 million in 2010 and 12.9 million in 2011, then 14 million in 2012 and 14.7 million in 2013.
One reason for this astonishing growth is the improvement of food security. The implementation of prevention systems to avoid salmonella and other problems has allowed to increase production and exports. The sector expects to further increase its exports and will discuss it at the Congreso de Melón y Sandía + Vegetable 2013 which takes place in San Pedro Sula.
