Adepts of a less consumption of meat, the flexégégétariens would be 23 million thus causing the expansion of the consumption of the products of vegetable origin.
Last year in France sales of vegetarian and vegan products in supermarkets and hypermarkets (GMS) generated a turnover of around 380 million euros, an increase of 24% compared to the previous year, according to data from the studies of the Xerfi institute.
The Xerfi Institute points out that this market for vegetarian and vegan products is 10 times lower than sales of organic products but that it is booming and should progress further. An average annual growth of 17% is expected for the period 2019-2021, this market should exceed 600 million euros within 3 years.
According to estimates of the institute, vegetarians represent 1.3 million people or 2% of the French population and vegans 340 000 people or 0.5% of the French population. The most numerous are the "Flexivégétariens", who are adept at a limited consumption of meat, which would represent nearly 23 million people, or just over a third of the population.
