In China, extreme weather conditions in Guangdong and Guangxi, the 2 main lychee-growing areas, have severely affected lychee production.
According to the Bloomberg press agency and the local media, industry experts are predicting a 45% drop in total national production volume. The decline could reach 50% in the Guangdong region and 59% in the Guangxi region.
Chinese lychee production is expected to be between 1.65 and 1.75 million tonnes.
Most of the country's production is destined for the domestic market, with very little exported (10,000 tonnes by 2022). For consumers, prices are skyrocketing, with a 10-fold increase over last year. In some parts of the country, individual lychees are now being sold.
