With the 30% increase in its durian acreage over the last decade, Thailand plans to increase its production by + 83% by 2025. And become the world's leading producer of durian.
Thailand is in the race to become the world's leading producer of durian according to Aat Pisanwanich, director of the CITS (Center for International Trade Studies) of the Chamber of Commerce. Taking into account the growth (+ 30%) in cultivated areas over the last decade, durian production is expected to increase by 83% from 2021 to 2025 to reach 2.02 million tonnes.
This volume of 2.02 million tonnes will enable Thailand to become the world's leading producer of durian. Last year production amounted to 1.11 million tonnes placing Thailand in 2nd position behind Indonesia which produced 1.20 million tonnes of durian, the largest volume in the world.
The increase in Thai production has been considerable, around +6,000 tonnes per year between 2011 and 2016 then +140,000 tonnes per year between 2017 and 2020. This increase is the result of the expansion of production areas in the north-east of the country and especially in the south which recorded an increase of + 300% in areas dedicated to durian.
