During the ban, Indian producers moved their products to the domestic market which recovered less than exports.
The European Union has just lifted its ban on imports of 4 vegetables from India: aubergine, taro, bitter gourd (Momordica charantia), snake squash (Trichosanthes cucumerina).
The ban expired in December 2016 and the EU does not extend it. The ban was decided after the detection of fruit flies in certain lots. Recently, an EU delegation traveled to India to inspect farms and packaging sites. Now a certification of products ensuring quality control will have to accompany all shipments.
The ban is lifted, however the EU will continue to monitor imports of vegetables from India for a period of 6 months.
Annual exports of these 4 vegetables represent less than 5% of total exports to the EU. The main destinations for Indian products in the EU are the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium.
