Growing global demand for Peruvian potato

In Peru, the Ministry for the Development of Agriculture and Irrigation (Midagri) projects that by the end of 2021, potato exports will reach 18.000 tons, valued at $5 million.
The total area of potato cultivation is estimated to reach 68.000 hectares.
This forecast is explained by the growing demand in international markets for Peruvian potatoes in their various presentations: in Europe for processed potato, and in the US for processed, pre-cooked and frozen.
Juan Miguel Quevedo, the specialist of the Midagri potato chain commented that in 2020, despite the pandemic, they exported 17.160 tons, and by 2021 they estimate to export up to 18.000 tons.
In addition, Bolivia became one of the main buyers of fresh Peruvian potatoes from Arequipa, Apurímac, Cusco, and Puno.
Quevedo specified that Bolivia has covered 1.1 million tons of a total demand of 1.2 million tons of potatoes.
In 2020 it was a record when Bolivians bought 16.000 tons of fresh Peruvian potato, destined to companies which process and sell potato to fast food restaurants which increased their presence in Bolivia.
