El Niño climate phenomenon that intensifies the rains on the west side of the continent.

This year a superior production of bananas is expected in comparaison to last year.

AEBE ( Asociación de Exportadores de Banano del Ecuador ) estimates that production could exceed the 300 million cartons ( 295 million last year).

But this year these forecasts could be shaken by El Nino . This weather phenomenon could seriously increase precipitation by the end of the year , causing floods plantations and intensification of parasites. Which would have a direct impact on production and the harvested volume.

According to a government study only 27% of plantations in the country are in low flood risk areas , 44% in areas with medium risks and 29% in high-risk areas.
