Panama Oeste is consolidating its position as the national pineapple capital, concentrating 95% of the national production. In the 2023-2024 agricultural cycle, the province cultivated more than 1,776 hectares of pineapple, with the work of 123 producers.
The most outstanding variety is MD2, widely accepted in international markets. So far in 2025 alone, Panamanian producers have exported more than 224,000 boxes, equivalent to 28 million kilograms, from the district of La Chorrera, according to Panamanian media.
The United States continues to be the main buyer, absorbing close to 60% of exports, followed by European Union countries, as well as destinations such as Libya, France and Belgium.
A study by the Technological University of Panama (UTP), in conjunction with Cemcit AIP, confirmed that the township of Herrera, in West Panama, concentrates almost 80% of the national pineapple production. The research also revealed that the soils in the area have high levels of essential nutrients such as potassium, calcium and magnesium, although they are deficient in nitrogen.
Growing pineapple in Panama requires considerable investment; about 50% is spent on inputs and irrigation systems. Therefore, researchers propose precision agriculture using nutrient maps to apply fertilizers only where they are needed.
This not only improves crop yields, but also reduces the use of chemicals and environmental impact, benefiting both the producer and the environment.
