Mexico forecasts 4% rise in potato production for 2025/26

While production expands, the sector faces various challenges.
Mexico is expected to produce 2.28 million metric tons of potatoes in the 2025/26 season, a 4% increase from the previous year thanks to improved rainfall. The total planted area is estimated at 63,000 hectares, with Sonora remaining the top-producing state. Despite growth, ongoing drought in Sonora and Sinaloa may still impact crop size.
Fresh potato imports are projected to increase 5%, reaching 225,000 tons, while frozen potato imports are also expected to rise by 5% to 327,000 tons.
U.S. potatoes dominate Mexico’s imports, both fresh and frozen. However, local growers express concern about market saturation, price drops, labour shortages in Sinaloa, and phytosanitary risks from imports. Domestic producers still supply over 90% of Mexico’s fresh potatoes, but rising import demand — especially from the foodservice sector — continues to shape the market.
