Zambia has finalized a bilateral agreement with South Africa for the export of fresh avocados. Agriculture Minister Reuben Mtolo, in remarks delivered by Acting Permanent Secretary Mwendalubi Msoka, said the ministry is now working closely with avocado farmers to ensure compliance with export standards.
The announcement was made during the launch of a partnership with the Lusaka Avocado Multi-purpose Cooperative Society. The initiative aims to support small-scale farmers and boost employment in the agribusiness sector.
Some cooperative members plan to begin value addition by processing and packaging avocado oil for use as edible oil. One of the largest retail chains has also confirmed sourcing avocados from six local suppliers, with 45 tonnes purchased over the past year.
The new export opportunity is expected to further strengthen Zambia’s avocado industry and increase income for smallholder producers.
