The strawberry season in Huelva is on the equator, and the Huelva Strawberry Producers and Exporters Association, Freshuelva, reports that production this season is 30% lower than on the same date of the previous year, a figure that unlikely to recover until campaign close.
The manager of Freshuelva, Rafael Domínguez, recalled the problems during planting due to the excessive heat in October, which even made it necessary to replant 20% of the plants, and the excessive cold in January and February, which resulted in a serious drop in the production and little supply of strawberries in the markets.
As for blueberries, the Association projects that production will fall by 25% compared to expectations, mainly due to the delay in the arrival of low temperatures. During the months of November, December and January, the lowest temperatures have been above average for these dates. In addition, the cold in the last weeks of February and early March has reduced calibres.
In the same way, they point out that due to a high concentration of salts, the water available for irrigation does not have optimal quality characteristics for the proper development of the crop.
