In Morocco, the Gharb area recorded an increase in its cultivated areas and is heading towards a new record season for its production of red fruits (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries).
During an intervention on a national news channel, Khalid Yakoubi of ORMVAG (Regional office for agricultural development of Gharb) underlined the importance of the red fruit sector in the Garb area which concentrates the majority of dedicated farms in the RSK region (Rabat-Salé-Kénitra).
"The region occupies 1st place nationally in volume of production of red fruits, with 65% of the picking" underlined Mr Khalid Yakoubi. Specifying that the harvest should reach 172,000 tons, an increase of +36% over one year and +25% on average over the last 5 campaigns.
The area cultivated with red fruits, for this 2021-22 campaign, amounts to 5,720 hectares, an increase of +44% compared to the previous campaign. This total is broken down into 2,580 hectares for strawberries (i.e. 45%), 1,910 hectares for blueberries (i.e. 33%), 1,220 hectares for raspberries (i.e. 21%) and 10 hectares for blackberries ( i.e. less than 1%).
