This limitation of imports is a deliberate choice to support small local producers face competition from foreign producers. Producers in the country have enough of these products to meet the demand.
The large neighboring country, South Africa, is one of the largest suppliers of imported fruits and vegetables in Botswana.
Botswana has just over 2 million inhabitants and imports each year about 34,000 tons of fruits and vegetables that complement the local production estimated 41,000 tons.
