The transport blockade that began in Sicily has implications across the country and for the supply to wholesale markets.
The protest movement called "Forconi" started in Sicily to fight against government austerity measures and fuel taxes (1.70 € per litre on average). The protest is backed by farmers and carriers that have blocked the entrances to highways, ports and refineries located
in Sicily, paralyzing all activities.
A domino effect, blocked transport in Sicily and the lack of available fuel has slowed trade, disrupting shipments of fruit and vegetable producing areas of the south, affecting wholesale markets in Italy and also export.
With regard to imports from Western Europe the trucks avoiding highways or blockades are affected by certain tolls.
