Sales of organic products grew by + 19.1% in Switzerland

The year 2020 is a record year for sales of organic products in Switzerland. The closure of the HoReCa sector led to changes in the consumption of Swiss people who bought more organic products. The market share of organic products reached 10.8%.
Bio Suisse presented the annual figures on organic development in the country. Due to the closure of the HoReCa sector (Hotel, Restaurant, Catering), the Swiss have cooked their meals at home and increased their purchases in retail stores. The Swiss bought organic foodstuffs in 2020 for a value exceeding 3.8 billion CHF (4.1 billion USD), i.e. + 19.1% compared to 2019.
The market share of organic products in Switzerland reached 10.8% in 2020, compared to 10.3% in 2019. Per capita consumption reached 455 CHF (493 USD).
In addition to the change in habits and because of the closing of the borders, the Swiss bought more local products. Vegetables (23.9% market share) are among the Top 3 favorite products of Swiss consumers, just behind eggs and bread. The turnover (1.05 billion CHF) as well as the market share (8.2% or + 22.4%) of prepackaged products grew above average.
Retail remains the most important market, although direct sales revenue increased by 30% in 2020. According to Bio Suisse, the 3,500 or so catering companies could increase their demand for organic products. .
In Switzerland there are 7,450 agricultural companies working according to the Specifications of Bio Suisse, which represents 93% of the total organic farms in the country, and cultivating 172,090 hectares of agricultural area (+ 2,730 hectares compared to the last year).
