Switzerland imports 70% of its annual strawberry requirements.
In Switzerland strawberry production only starts in May and covers only 30% of the total annual consumption. This year, as in previous years, the country imports large volumes of strawberries.
As of February, imports, mainly from Spain, arrive on the Swiss market. Then a peak of consumption is observed for the Easter period. In 2018, the Swiss consumed 1,700 tons of strawberries during Easter week.
As national production starts only in May, all strawberries consumed before that date come from abroad. In volume this represents 9,500 tons of imported strawberries before the beginning of the national production.
By the end of April, it is estimated that the volume of strawberries already accounts for half of the total annual strawberry consumption.
