Spanish mangos and avocados point to recovery after years of drought

However, foreign trade shows mixed signals.
After several years marked by drought and falling production, the tropical fruit sector in Spain, especially mango and avocado, faces 2025 with good prospects. The rains of the last few weeks have significantly improved the state of the crops, especially in Malaga, the main producing area of the country.
Although it is still too early to know how much production will grow, the Spanish Tropical Association stresses that, if the weather continues to be favourable, a record campaign could be achieved. The trees, affected by almost three years of water deficit, have benefited from these rains that have helped the soil to recover.
In terms of prices, the avocado has remained in positive values, between 0.19 and 0.24 euros per kilo, similar to the same period last year. The sector has been able to take advantage of the lower supply from other origins to maintain stability despite the low volume.
However, foreign trade shows mixed signals. Andalusian exports have fallen by 14% in volume and 10% in value, with a sharp decline outside the European Union. However, sales within the EU have improved by 9% in unit value, reaching 3.31 euros per kilo.
The sector rules out that the tariffs announced by the United States will affect Spanish fruit, since its production is still much lower than that of major exporters such as Peru or Mexico.
