Steadily increasing growing areas of blueberries (+600% in 5 years) will lead Mexico to compete with Chile in the U.S.

In Mexico, blueberry production is steadily increasing and the country is becoming a serious competitor of Chile.

In Mexico the size of blueberries growing area has increased over 600% in five years, from 60 hectares in 2005 to more than 400 hectares last year. If the surfaces in Mexico are still far short of the 13,000 hectares planted in Chile, its proximity to the United States is an advantage.

The Chilean newspaper El Mercurio believes that Chile is the leading provider of blueberries in the U.S. but could lose market share. The Americans will be tempted to buy from their neighbours and this could reduce imports of Chilean products. The Committee of Arándanos Productores de Chile believes that Mexico is a potential competitor of Chile to the U.S. market.
