Production and export of avocados are on the rise, according to Rabobank's “2024 Report: Trade gradually changes as the industry expands.” Mexico, Peru, and Colombia are expected to become the top exporters by 2026, keeping Latin America as the leading export region, though global diversification is underway. The United States remains the main importer, heavily relying on Mexico.
Avocado consumption in Europe varies by country, while Asian and Latin American markets show great growth potential. Industry consolidation is expected, particularly in South America.
Rabobank highlights that avocado production and exports are poised to expand at varying growth rates depending on the region. By 2026, Mexico, Peru, and Colombia will lead exports. Although Latin America will continue to dominate, production and exports will diversify globally. Innovation will be crucial for industry players to maintain profitability in increasingly competitive markets and face supply-side challenges.
The United States will continue to be the largest importer, with Mexico supplying more than 90% of its imports. In Europe, avocado consumption varies significantly between countries, but there is substantial growth potential in Asia and Latin America.
The Hass variety will remain dominant, but similar varieties with higher yield potential and improved efficiencies will be gradually adopted. The report notes that the industry remains fragmented in some countries, and growing competition, along with margin pressures, will drive consolidation, especially in South America.
