A fourth deep-sea berth and more automated equipment are expected to bring the terminal’s capacity to around 5 million TEU.
Rotterdam World Gateway (RWG) is moving ahead with a €500 million final expansion phase at its Maasvlakte 2 container terminal, according to Rotterdam World Gateway.
The project will add a fourth deep-sea berth designed to handle the largest container vessels. RWG plans to install five new quay cranes, 22 automated stacking cranes across 11 storage modules and 24 automated guided vehicles.
The terminal is also considering a BoxBay system for empty containers, which could provide capacity for around 30,000 TEU. Charging infrastructure for electric equipment, gate capacity and facilities for non-standard cargo will also be expanded.
Work on the fourth berth will take place alongside RWG’s existing expansion program. The third berth is expected to enter commercial operation in 2027, while capacity from the final phase is scheduled to become commercially available before 2030.
Once the development is completed, RWG expects total terminal capacity to reach approximately 5 million TEU. The latest €500 million investment will bring cumulative spending on the terminal to around €2 billion.
RWG CEO Ronald Lugthart said the expansion is intended to strengthen both the terminal’s long-term operations and Rotterdam’s position as a major gateway to European markets.
