Castellón wildfire leaves heavy losses across farming areas

Fruit trees account for the largest part of the agricultural damage left by the Castellón wildfire. Losses related to damaged trees, replanting and the years needed to restore production are estimated at €18 million, according to AVA-ASAJA.

Citrus, olives, almonds, carob and avocados are among the crops most affected. Losses from current production and future harvests add another estimated €10 million.

Agricultural infrastructure has also taken a heavy hit. Damage to greenhouses, irrigation systems, storage buildings, fences and other facilities is put at around €9 million.

Taken together, the association estimates agricultural damage at €35–40 million. More than 2,000 hectares of farmland and agricultural areas were affected by the fire, including land close to burned forests and fields along ravines through which the flames spread.

Farmers have also faced disruption to irrigation and crop protection work during the heat wave. Damage was reported to machinery, vehicles and homes as well.

AVA-ASAJA welcomed labor and social measures adopted by the Spanish government and the €67 million aid package approved by the Valencian regional government. It is asking for additional national support for farms affected by the fires.
