Washington and Oregon new-crop onion shipments accelerate

New-crop onion shipments from Washington’s Columbia Basin and Oregon’s Umatilla Basin rose sharply during the three weeks ending July 31, according to the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service.

Volumes increased from 0.8 million pounds in the week ending July 18 to 4.6 million pounds in the week ending July 25 and 17 million pounds in the week ending July 31. Exports rose from zero to 1.4 million pounds and then 2.8 million pounds over the same period.

USDA expects shipments to continue increasing as more companies begin handling the 2026 crop.

Selected prices move higher

Trading was moderate on August 3. Compared with July 27, prices increased for colossal yellow onions and jumbo red onions, while other categories were unchanged.

Fifty-pound sacks of colossal yellow hybrid onions were priced at $16–18. Jumbo yellow onions were mostly $15, while medium sizes ranged from $13 to $15.

For red onions, 25-pound sacks of jumbo sizes were mostly $13–14. Medium red onions were offered at $11–12.

Total US onion shipments reached 103.7 million pounds in the week ending July 31. The number of retail onion advertisements rose 11% from the previous week to 11,965.
