Indonesia, which is a major importer of garlic, mainly Chinese garlic, wishes to strengthen its national production in order to reduce its dependence on imports.
In 2019 Indonesia imported around 465,000 tonnes of garlic and in 2020 the import volume exceeded 600,000 tonnes. National production is only around 100,000 tonnes.
The Ministry of Agriculture wants to stimulate the national production of garlic. To reduce dependence on imports and achieve self-sufficiency, the country needs to multiply its garlic production by 5. Thanks in particular to the expansion of areas.
In the country in 2019, garlic plantations covered an area of 12,000 hectares. To achieve the desired self-sufficiency, a plantation expansion program is being studied. According to the ministry, the area of garlic plantations should be extended by at least 70,000 hectares.
"Production can be increased over the next 4 years so that we can achieve the goal of self-sufficiency in garlic production," commented Mr Sukarman, director of horticulture at the Ministry of Agriculture.
For Indonesian professionals, productivity is also a factor to take into account. In the 1990s the country was able to meet its needs through domestic production, but yields continuously declined due to low quality plants.
