A pilot project focused on winter onion cultivation has been launched in Ukraine’s Odesa region. The initiative is being led by the All-Ukrainian Council of Women Farmers in partnership with a seed company from South Korea.
According to Ukrainian media, the first phase involves planting five hectares of winter onions at a local farm using Korean agricultural methods. The South Korean partner has supplied seeds, crop protection products, and growth stimulants, while Ukrainian specialists are responsible for cultivation and testing the varieties under local climate conditions.
In 2025, the project is expected to expand to 150–250 hectares. Long-term plans include developing an onion production cluster spanning 1,000 hectares, supported by an estimated $10 million in investment. This cluster would cover all stages of production — from seed cultivation and storage to processing and distribution — with export potential being considered.
Winter onion varieties are regarded as a good fit for small and medium-sized farms. The initiative is designed in part to support women-led and family-run agricultural enterprises. A separate plan proposes the construction of an onion processing facility in the region, with an estimated value of $36 million.
