Time To Harvest
MLK
After an examination by a commission formed by different authorities, the commission agreed on maturity for harvest “Bursa Siyahi” and allowed harvest on 11 August with permit for exportation by 12 August. Uludag Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exportation Association (UYMSIB) Chairman of the Board states that black fig of “Bursa”, registered in 1990 by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural affairs, has a high economic value.
Even though hit by hail and attacked by rust disease, black fig’s harvest puts a smile to producers. While these incidents occur, producers were guessing 30 % lost. But after harvest, which began these days, fig per kilo made 5 Turkish Liras. Last year about 15 thousand tons were exported for a value of 35 million dollars. This season, despite the expected losses an increase of about 10 % in exportation is expected.
Black fig of “Bursa” has gained recognition after Cambridge Duchess Kate Middleton preference over figs. And this creates demand for black figs.
