Fewer litchis for export to Europe
MD
Madagascar has not reached the predicted quanitiy of litchis for export (17,500 tons) and will only send 14,000 tons to Europe.
The decline in exports follows a fall in production. In recent years, late rains have hit the main production areas and caused a decline in volumes. This year many areas were not ripe at the start of the season, scheduled for November 25 by the Group of exporters of lychee (GEL).
The date has raised controversy because it is decided by GEL according to the constraints of export ships to arrive in Europe before Christmas. If the start of exports had been shifted to late November or early December, the production and export volumes would have been greater.
