Season kicks off with increases in fruit and veg imports, led by EU suppliers

In January 2023, Spain imported 309,569 tons of fresh fruits and vegetables, which is 13% higher than the same month last year. Out of the total imports, 55% came from the European Union and the remaining 45% were from non-EU countries, according to data from the Department of Customs and Excise of the Tax Agency.
Of the total imports, 171,616 tons came from the EU, which represents a growth of 18% compared to January 2022. France was the main supplier of fruits and vegetables to Spain within the EU, with 99,5345 tons imported in January 2023, showing a YoY growth of 28%.
The non-EU imports amounted to 137,952 tons, which is 7% higher than last year. Morocco was the main supplier, providing 43,964 tons of fresh fruits and vegetables.
The total value of Spain's fresh fruit and veg imports in January 2023 was at 310 million euros, which is a 21% increase compared to January 2022. Of this total, 115.2 million euros corresponded to EU fruits and veg, showing a 36% growth, while the remaining 195 million euros were attributed to non-EU imports, which increased by 13%.
