Sales of fresh organic products continued to grow in the United States, with + 3.4% in value and + 7.3% in volume (Photo: sustainablefoodnews.com).
In the United States, despite the comparison with the period in 2020 which was marked by the purchase of large volumes due to the pandemic, sales of fresh organic products for the 3rd quarter of 2021 show an increase of + 3.4%
Organic Produce Network has published the report prepared by aar Category Partners regarding sales of fresh organic products for the 3rd quarter of 2021. Sales of organic products increased in value by + 3.4% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2020, to reach totaled $ 2.29 billion for the quarter, and increased in volume by + 1.6%.
The organic berry category (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries) is the 1st organic segment in terms of sales in dollars in the 3rd quarter of 2021, exceeding 407 million USD for the quarter, an increase of + 11% in dollars compared to in the same period of 2020. Growth in volume also with + 7.3% for the quarter.
Apples recorded the largest increase in dollar sales, up + 12.7% from the same period a year earlier. The increases in volumes come from lettuce (+ 6.3%), citrus fruits (+ 5.7%) and bananas (+ 3.8%). Over the period studied, 3 categories - berries, apples and packaged salads - accounted for 85% of dollar growth.
On the other hand, over the period studied and compared to the 3rd quarter of 2020, fresh products from conventional agriculture saw their sales increase by only + 1.3% in value but vary in volume by -2.3%.
