After more than a decade of negotiations, Peruvian grapes were finally able to enter the Japanese market. And in just the last four months of last year, in its debut before Japanese consumers, the Peruvian fruit managed to slip through with 1820 tonnes, valued at around $6.5 million.
According to data from Promperu, so far, the 145 containers that have arrived in the country (including this year's) have not presented any problems, rigorously complying with the cold treatments according to the phytosanitary protocol. Everything has gone smoothly and it is hoped that this will continue to be the case until the end of the season. There have been no rejections and all shipments have complied with cold treatments and MRLs (maximum residue limits).
Promperú considers that the quality is good, the size, the colours and the sugar levels are just right. In very isolated cases, they have received comments about the size of some varieties, but in general, the grape is meeting the expectations of Japanese importers.
