Bananas from Costa Rica certified with the geographical indication
MD
Costa Rica has become the second Latin American country to receive a "geographical indication" for its bananas.
This certification will allow bananas from Costa Rica to be recognized as a unique brand in international markets. For producers, it is also recognition of good manufacturing practices and quality of the fruit.
The certification will have a positive impact on exports, particularly in Europe. For CORBANA (National company of bananas), this distinction is important and will become an instrument of competitiveness that will highlight the added value and the difference of product quality.
Bananas are the main agricultural export of Costa Rica, which generated incomes of 625.45 million dollars in 2009.
