Less hand-sorting with accuracy above 87%: possible with 360 Degree Rotation by Red Pearl Systems LLC

The patented 360 degree rotation, which allows the cameras to see 100% of the fruit, was represented by Red Pearl Systems LLC at the PMA Fresh Summit expo in USA.

This technology is included in the Red Pearl 360, a small fruit sorter. Equipped with state-of-the-art, HD cameras, the RP360 is able to capture highly accurate images of each piece of fruit passing below. The specifics of each piece are calculated using multiple images for optimal quality assurance.

“The 360 degree rotation allows turning the fruit 360 degrees under the camera system. So the cameras see 100% of the fruit. All sorters claim 80-90% of accuracy. When we say 87% accuracy, we mean 87% on 100% of a fruit”, says C. Rudy Freiberg, Sr. Sales Engineer of Red Pearl Systems LLC.

Each RP360 comes with EasySort, a simple-to-use software that makes picking sorting parameters and assigning them to a drop a breeze. The software is easily learned and requires only a trained "operator" to run the machine.

The RP360 processes up to 30 pockets per second for each lane. The standard RP360 is equipped with 2 lanes while the largest has 24. The 24 lanes make for a very small 66” wide machine with their patented ejection process. Depending on the sorting parameters, the RP360 can move up to 9 tons of average sized cherries per hour on its 24 lane machine. It sees size, color, shape, blemish, softness, defect and complexion of each fruit and does an exquisite job of stem identification in cherries. In addition, it utilizes infrared cameras combined with LED lighting to reveal the hidden qualities of the fruit just under the skin.

Mr. Freiberg sums up: “The RP360 works just as fast during poor, wet seasons where crops would require a lot more manual sorting. This means savings of hundreds of thousands in labor and overtime pay”.
