Nature’s Pride and Apeel expanding the market reach for Apeel avocados
Nature's Pride, Dutch supplier of fruit and vegetables, and Apeel that protects produce by slowing spoilage-causing water loss and oxidation, will expand the Apeel avocado market in the Netherlands, Switzerland and Norway.
Apeel avocados have long been available nationwide in Germany and Denmark. Measurements during the pilot phase revealed over 50% reduction in food waste at retail stores supplied with these avocados. The difference per trailer load is 3,900 avocados, which is the equivalent of 640 kg CO2 environmental savings and 720,000 liters of water in the supply chain. These successful results have encouraged other countries to join the initiative. Apeel avocado pilot programs started this week in the Netherlands, pilots have also kick off in Norway, and three retail chains are currently in a pilot phase in Switzerland.
Adriëlle Dankier, Chief Commercial Officer of Nature's Pride shared they are also expanding the range of Apeel-treated products. "We hope to start with mangos in early 2021. In this way, we want to introduce greater numbers of consumers in Europe to our products with Apeel," he added.
The plant-based materials in Apeel coating help growers, suppliers and retailers to retain moisture and reduce in the fruit for oxidation over an extended period, which improves their products quality and extends the shelf life. This innovative technology reduces food waste in the supply chain from the grower to the shop shelf and kitchen table.
Nature's Pride is a supplier of unique fruit & vegetables from 59 countries. From Ready-to-Eat and exotics to the tastiest berries and off-season products.
