Currently, Cambodia can export 16 agricultural products to China, including cassava, corn, bananas, mangoes, coconuts, cashew nuts, pepper, and durian.
Cambodian farmers are set to benefit from a new $30 million fruit and vegetable export deal with China’s Henan province. The agreement, signed on September 10, will run for the next two years and aims to boost agricultural trade between the two sides.
Commerce Minister Cham Nimul and Henan’s Vice Governor Zheng Haiyang formalised the memorandum of understanding alongside Chinese companies Sun Fruit and Vegetable Co. and Nongde Agricultural Development Co. The deal comes as Cambodia looks to expand exports of key crops such as mango, longan, and durian.
Economic analyst Chey Tech said that this move could raise farmer incomes, but stressed the need for government support. He noted Cambodia must improve production capacity, infrastructure, irrigation, and technology to meet demand. He also urged the promotion of market standards and contract farming to secure buyers during harvest seasons.
